Treatment

• Most people clear hepatitis B without treatment
• Only people with chronic hepatitis B are more likely to need treatment
• Antiviral treatment aims to stop or limit the virus from damaging the liver, it supresses the virus rather than curing it
• It is usually one daily tablet
• The length of treatment depends on how much damage there is to the liver – treatment may last years and the patient will require ongoing monitoring
• In Scotland the main treatment options are:
• Tenofovir Disoproxil (TDF) 245mg daily
• Entecavir 0.5mg daily
• Tenovofir Alafenamide (TAF) daily

Note: Tenofovir is part of PrEP medication, PrEP can suppress the hepatitis B virus
